The Walking Dead (AMC) S4:E5 *SPOILERS*

The-Walking-Dead-Wallpaper1After last week’s episode, hopefully the show will continue it’s momentum and we will have another good episode with the fallout of Rick’s decision to tell Carol to kick rocks.

We start with Rick driving home in silence. Again we focus on Rick’s bandaged hand, emphasizing again that he kicked Tyrese’s ass. C’mon guys, now you are just rubbing it in. He also seems angry. Angry at Carol or himself?

Hershel is with Glen and Sasha treating Emmett. Makes a spaghetti joke that COMPLETELY falls flat. He has also decided to take the dead bodies out of the cell block before head stabbing them. Doesn’t want the others to see. Kind of like taking the family dog to the farm. “The people don’t have to see it. I don’t want them to.” Hershel has actually never killed a walker? I think that means he’s gonna pop his cherry tonight.

OPENING CREDITS

Maggie wants to come in to help her dad. Hershel won’t let her, obviously. She was supposed to see Glenn. He is resting. Apparently he is resting against the wall. Doesn’t want her to see him in his condition.

Back to Maggie at the fence. There are a LOT more walkers at the fence. Maggie lets Rick in, obviously noticing he is alone. “Where’s Carol?” Oh shit, Rick actually tells the truth. “Would you have brought her back?” “You were right.” Score 1 vote for Team Rick.

“Carl? CARL?” Getting back the Where’s Carl meme? Carl wants to help. Claims he is immune to virus. Shut up kid, get back inside.

Caleb, the other doctor, is sick. Tells Hershel he is past the point of no return and he needs to help the other patients. Hershel Just wants to take a look at him. “Fine, take a look.” And he is bleeding from his eyes. Yep, he’s fucked.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

And another patient/inmate bites the dust. Anybody else think the point of bringing in all the new people is that the show can kill them off and make it look like important people are getting killed without actually killing any important people? Yeah, thought so. Unfortunately for Hershel everybody saw this one die. Hershel kills his first walker, but can’t look at him as he does it.

Hershel talks to Rick. Tells him that he still believes in a grand plan. A reason for all of this. Rick tells him about Carol (offscreen).

Sasha down. Hershel tends to her. Another patient has died and begins to rise as a walker.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Rick and Maggie are trying to reinforce the fence with large logs. They are usually kept in prisons, apparently.

Sasha is fine, she just passed out. Glen is upstairs using the breathing bag on Emmett. And Emmett is out. Glen starts CPR, but no dice. Tries to call out for Hershel but starts coughing up a lung. And a lot of blood.

Hershel is attacked by walkers. Patients are dropping like flies, just like Caleb predicted (FORESHADOWING!!). Another nameless patient goes to shoot the walker on Hershel but is bit by another walker, causing his shot to hit a third walker in the chest. Maggie hears gunshot and goes running towards the cell block. Emmett gets up and starts to go after Glen. Lizzie enters and starts to lead him away. “Come on boy.” She’s a weird one, but as far as zombies go, it’s a pretty cute scene. Hershel is surrounded by walkers. This is getting pretty damn intense.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

Rick gets Carl to help with the fence. Nice little father-son bonding moment.

Emmett attacks Lizzie. Well, shit. Looks like Yeller needs to be put down.  Hershel comes to the rescue and bodyslams Emmett onto a fenced platform like thingy (Yes, that is it’s technical name). Maggie is trying to use an ax to break the door down. Doesn’t seem like the brightest idea, and of course doesn’t work. Hershel goes to get help from Caleb.

Nope, he’s a walker. Hershel head stabs him. His first walker kill while looking at him. Now he’s just getting slutty.

Rick and Carl at the fence. Rick smiles at Carl like a proud papa. And now a log snaps and the fence comes down. They escape, for now.

Hershel gets the shotgun from Caleb’s cell. Rick and Carl get some semi-automatic rifles and start mowing down the walkers. Why the hell didn’t they do that BEFORE they knocked the fence down?

Maggie shoots through a glass window and enters the quarantine area. Glen has stopped breathing. Hershel has to get the breathing bag from Emmett. He struggles with Emmett on the fenced platform like thingy. Maggie shoots Emmett but not the bag. Nice shot! They jam it down Glen’s throat just in the nick of time. Glen is going to live.

“You came in here.” “I had to. Just like you.”

Lizzie walks into the cell and starts playing with Glen’s bloody puke on the floor with her boot. This kid is seriously fucked up.

FINALLY the Scooby gang shows up with the meds. I was starting to think they were off getting drunk on Bob’s hooch. Tyrese is comforting Sasha as Bob is mixing the meds. Hershel finally gets to rest. He goes into the cell with Caleb and pulls out his bible. He starts sobbing.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

And it’s the next morning. Rick offers to help Michonne with…something. She brushes him off anyway. He tells Carl he needs to talk to Darryl. “Now?” “No, not now.” They walk off.

Hershel tells Darryl that Glen made it through the night and is breathing on his own now. “Where’s Carol?” “You need to talk to Rick.”

We end with Rick and Carl having another father son moment. The camera pans back and watching them is…THE GOVERNOR

END CREDITS

Holy shit. GREAT episode. Scott Wilson (Hershel) was incredible in this episode, and it was intense as hell the entire way through. The scene with him sobbing reading the bible at the end was heartbreaking and absolutely earned with his hectic pace the entire episode. Everything about this episode was awesome. I’ve been giving the show shit for the flu storyline, but it paid off in a really big way. The cherry on top of course is The Governor’s return. Not only do we have him next week, but Rick will have to talk to Darryl about Carol. This season is really firing on all cylinders now. Bravo.
