E3 2013 Preview-Project Spark

Project Spark is difficult to classify in a typical sense, from the gameplay video we might infer that it seemed like a straight forward god game ala Black and White and Dust but upon digging further into the engine and what players had been creating in beta testing it appeared this rabbit hole might be a bottomless pit. The cloud save of this game can be accessed from a Windows 8 PC, Xbox One or Xbox 360. Allowing players across platforms (granted this is all MS tech) to have a shared experience.

Project Spark is a game making game, that’s right. This game is all about creation and the ability to apply it across a wide spectrum of focus, as mentioned above PCs and Xbox consoles can access content. You can also interface with the game using Kinect and the Smartglass app to mold and shape the world.

A quick look at the video and you can see some of the games already have been created inside of Project Spark, it’s a bit staggering on the brain. The idea of a giant shared open world game to create is amazing and hopefully Project Spark can deliver on it’s promise. From the demo we saw you can evolve a rock all the way from a rock, to a pet rock, then to a rock companion and finally to a giant rock mech. In writing it sounds a bit wonky, but the concept is that you give the rock a “brain” or a “spark” and from there you evolve it. Paging Dr. Herbert Wyndham.

You have a giant creative playground for your mind to run wild in, this is one title I was sad I did not take more time to investigate at E3 but I can tell you this is going to be taking quite a toll on my social life.

It is a novel idea, create live and continue to evolve it. Just remember when someone asks you if you’re a god, you say “YES”!
