Well it is time to jump on the bandwagon once again with a list of my favorite games of 2016. I don’t say best because that kind of shit is subjective but these are the ones I dug the most. There were some other great games last year but I wanted to keep the list a tight five. Honorable mentions, however, are Deus Ex Mankind Divided and the Telltale Batman. I also want to mention the Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Remaster just because I didn’t feel like a five year old game should be on the list but I have played the holy living shit out of it so it is still worth a mention. That is what a well made game looks like. As always, these are just my opinions and not objective fact. If you want to debate reasonably, please do so in the comments below and if you disagree with my picks then leave your own. It is only fair. Here we go:
5. Dishonored 2: I enjoyed the first Dishonored and its mix of stealth with Bioshock style gameplay but I found the morality system to be a bit too unforgiving and felt punished for my chosen play style. Here, the system feels more forgiving while expanding on options with two different characters to choose from. The visuals are awesome, the story is engaging, and the voice acting is top-notch. A very worth follow up to a good first effort.
4. Dead Rising 4: This has been a bit controversial as a core element of the classic gameplay has been removed but for my money it was a very good change. You play as Frank West heading back to where the whole thing started for another zombie filled adventure. Dead Rising has always been frustrating for me because you are given an awesome playground to run around in but a limited amount of time to do it. I found that this kept me stressed about the ticking clock and not taking advantage of all the potential fun going on around me. In this installment you have all of the fun with none of the time constraint. For me, this has allowed me to really dig in and do the things I always wanted to do but never had time for in the past. The move to put the timed version behind a DLC paywall was a poor one as it would be better if there were options available to play how you want without paying more for it but for my particular taste, this is just right.
3. Titanfall 2: Improving on the original kinetic gameplay in ways that matter while adding a sorely missed single-player mode elevates Titanfall 2 to the level that the first game should have started from. With more Titan variety and added movement abilities, the multiplayer delivers more of what was fun about the last installment with the sorts of tweaks they really needed. It isn’t perfect and some of the tweaks went the wrong way but for the most part this is what Titanfall should have always been. The single player campaign is great and is a much needed piece that was completely missing last time around.
2. Uncharted 4 a Thief’s End: A course correction from a third installment that I was somewhat disappointed by, Uncharted 4 brings the series to an end with more of what makes the series so awesome and some new stuff that makes it better. It was hampered somewhat by a prologue that goes on way too long before getting to the main game at hand, it is still fun and enjoyable all the way through. We are getting some more story in upcoming DLC and that is cool but this was the perfect way to send the series out on a high note.
1. Doom: This one caught me off guard. I have always been a Doom fan and before that a Wolfenstein fan, but I was really married to the Doom 3 style gameplay. I was really hoping for more dark and creepy horror. When I realized it was a return to the fast and furious gameplay of the original series I was a bit disappointed. Then I started playing and holy shit. This game is exciting, heart pounding, and has just the right amount of (adjustable) challenge. The visuals are awesome and the score is goddamn amazing. It is exactly what a return to formula should be and it was entertaining from beginning to end.
So that is my list. Like I said if you agree or disagree let me know in the comments below and share your list as well!
