And here we are on the last day of the show. Because I am a creature of habit I started off the day playing Street Fighter V. I played several times today with some wins and some losses but I got on every chance I got because this thing isn’t coming out until March next year so I need to get in as much time as possible.
My first appointment was to check out Divinity 2 Original Sin Enhanced Edition which has seen the game get a major overhaul in graphics, fully voiced speech, quests, ending and just about everything else. The split screen local co-op makes for interesting game play opportunities and the turn based mechanic returns for strategic and tactical gameplay. There are a lot of details that I will of course cover in the full preview but for now suffice it to say that it looks interesting and I would like to play more.
After Divinity I had another Focus Interactive meeting in which I was shown Battlefleet Gothic Armada, a space based RTS, Space Hulk Deathwing, an FPS based on a table top game, and Technomancer, a game that looks like it might have a Mass Effect sort of flavor and looks very promising. Of these I was most interested in Technomancer just based on my own personal taste in terms of the types of games I want to play but all of them looked worth checking out.
I wandered the floor a bit and played God of War III Remastered a bit because I can’t help tearing shit up with Kratos and then flitted around the Sony and Xbox booths until my next appointment which was with Polk Audio. I was shown the Striker Pro as well as the standard Striker. These are universal headsets with a lot of features that make sense for you if you have multiple systems or want to use the cans as a lifestyle set. The microphone is removable so you don’t have to look like a jackass walking down the street and the units come with three different connector cables so you can get the most use out of the set. I played some Mortal Kombat X with a pair of Strikers on and it sounded pretty great. Given the price, I may need to pick these up.
From Polk I went over to Nyko to check out some of their products. They had some cool things to show from a memory bank attachment for both the PS4 and Xbox One that can help with some storage solutions for both of those gigabyte challenged systems. They also had a sweet VR headset that was a real trip to play. The game was a isometric three-quarter view Zelda-like game that used the VR to allow you to look around 360 degrees and aim your bow by turning your head to look at it. This was pretty sweet and I like the application of the technology instead of just doing a first person experience.
Continuing the tech train I was on today I stopped by Astro/Skull Candy to take a look at this year’s headset offerings. Astro are bringing an A40 headset for the Xbox One that is compatible with everything else out there as well. I have to say, of all the headphones I have heard, Astro’s might be the best sounding of all of them. These are premium headsets so it makes sense but it is also reflected in the top dollar you will be paying. If the sound I heard today is any indication it is worth the money.
After Astro I decided to spend the last two hours of my short last day waiting in line to get into the Star Wars Battlefront booth. Again, I thought this was probably a theater experience but to my surprise and great joy it was hands on. It was a long wait but it was worth every moment from the detailed Hoth base decor complete with R2 and 3P0 to the way the force feedback in the controller shuddered in just the right way to feel like shooting a blaster. I can’t overstate enough how much of a visceral rush it was to run out into the snow to fight AT-ATs and snow trooprs. I have long ago tired of Hoth levels and I really don’t want to ever tow cable an AT-AT down again but it looked felt so good it was like being in the movie.
When I left the booth it was right at closing time and my E3 was over. It was pretty fantastic and while this truncated recap may not sound like I did a lot you will see in the coming days just how much ground was covered. Stay tuned for the previews!
