This was my 2nd trip to the Phoenix comicon, and I enjoyed it even more this year. Since I felt I didn’t quite get the whole experience last year, I planned to go for 2 days this year. It still wasn’t enough. This year the size of the exhibition hall nearly doubled, and the attendance was expected to be in excess of 70,000 people. While this is no San Diego Comic-Con, it is certainly no slouch either. Who knows, if it keeps growing like it has, maybe it too will someday get the kind of studio attention San Diego has.
We began Friday by attending the panel led by The Buzz Media’s own Patrick Ohlde and Katie Mullaly as they discussed their books and detailed a few of the paranormal investigations that they have conducted.
My personal highlight was meeting legendary X-Men scribe Chris Claremont and watching Joe O’Barr effortlessly sketch a highly detailed and perfect Crow on Mila’s poster in about 10 minutes.
While last year Dr. Who was clearly the big winner with hundreds of cosplayers donning Doctor costumes, this year it was definitely spread out fairly evenly. In my estimation the return of Star Wars had a huge impact on cosplayers, and Batman as always played a huge role. My pick for best amateur cosplayer went to this lady who wore two vey awesome Storm costumes through the weekend. Curious if she had even different ones for Thursday and Sunday as well.
All in all I had a fantastic time at this year’s convention, and am already excited to return next year for an even longer time. I leave you with every cosplayer that I got pictures of. Unfortunately some of the pictures are a bit fuzzy, so I apologize for that, but still wanted to include the pics for the awesome costumes.
