At last I give you my list of most anticipated movies of 2014 because I am positive that you are all waiting for it with bated breath. I am also positive that there are unicorns. Sure you might be wondering why I am posting this at the end of February, right before we start the third month of the year but as any longtime film fan will tell you, the year really doesn’t start until March when it comes to movies because either you are getting films from last year finally releasing wide or you get the the worst movies tossed into a pile where no one will notice much. February in particular is the year’s worst month for movies so I really haven’t missed much by waiting until now to post this. It should be mentioned, of course that because this is my list of my most anticipated movies it is not a declaration that these are the only films I am looking forward to nor that the movies you are looking forward to suck. This is also no guarantee of quality as each of these could suck enormously. I doubt it but it is possible. I have included trailers and posters when possible. Share your lists in the comments if you want to discuss 2014 movies, which is pretty fun. Here we go:
10. Bad Words (3/28)
Directed by and starring Jason Bateman, Bad Words is about a grown man who enters a child spelling bee through a loophole and proceeds to be a huge dick about it. I think the trailer looks hilarious and as a fan of Bateman I am very interested to see how he fares as a director. This could pretty easily go off the rails as well but I trust Bateman’s sensibilities and I am confident his sensibilities as an actor will carry through into directing.
9.Neighbors (5/9)
I never really thought I would be excited for a Zack Ephron movie but when you have Nicholas Stoller behind the camera and Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Dave Franco, Jake Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Lisa Kudrow on hand it is hard to say no. Add to that how great Ephron looks in the trailer and here we are. It is kind of weird that Rogen is playing the more grown up role here but such is life and the passage of time I suppose.
8. Raid 2: Berandal (3/28)
The original Raid movie was absolutely insane. With pretty much non-stop martial arts and almost no story or character development it was tantamount to martial arts porn. I am not saying that as if it is a bad thing. It was exactly what I wanted and exactly as badass as I had hoped. This has me very excited for the Raid 2 which by most accounts is even more action heavy and over the top than the first. I am not sure how this is possible but given that it features the return of the original director Gareth Evans and star Iko Uwais I have a lot of faith here. I would be a bit more worried had I not seen the pair’s previous film Merantau, but given that I have I know that these guys are quality and didn’t just get lucky with the Raid. I cannot wait.
7. X-Men Days of a Future Past (5/23)
I loved X-Men First Class and I was very excited to see what they did to follow it up. When I heard that Matthew Vaughn was not directing I lost some hope but Bryan Singer’s return counter acted that. This movie has a ton of characters and it seems like a lot going on but if you look at the source material from the comics, I think that the large cast of characters from previous films will have a smaller amount of screen time than a lot of fans suspect. I am very excited to see the two film series meet and I am hoping that when it is all over we will have a more coherent and unified continuity moving forward. I love Singer’s previous X-Men movies and I trust that he will give us something awesome here.
6.Captain America: Winter Soldier (4/4)
Releasing outside of the summer window, Captain America: Winter Soldier looks pretty amazing from the trailers shown so far and the focus on modern day with Cap while continuing elements from the first film is the best way to go about it. I am very excited to see the Falcon make his debut here and I am glad that we are seeing a return from Hydra as well. Marvel has been absolutely killing it and this looks like it is going to continue the trend.
5. 22 Jump Street (6/13)
There isn’t much more I need to say here than Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. After the first movie was just brilliant and the Lego Movie being the one great film so far this year I am pretty much willing to just buy a ticket to anything they are involved with. Trailers look like the two are keeping the tone the same for this sequel which has our heroes going undercover in college. It is a bit of a break from the premise but that is okay. Hopefully we will be getting more awesome cameos from cast from the TV show because the ones we got in the first movie were great.
4. Interstellar (11/7)
I don’t really know much about this movie aside from it is about space travelers using a worm hole to go some great distance and Christopher Nolan directed it but frankly that is enough. I know there is a bit of backlash on Nolan post Batman as people have to show how cool they are by not liking him but he was an amazing director before that franchise and I have no reason to believe that will change after.
3. Gone Girl (10/3)
This is another automatic choice for me. I have not read the book this is based upon but if you say ‘David Fincher’, I say ‘Here’s my money.’ I am glad to see Ben Affleck here as well as that is another hate bandwagon I have never jumped upon. Further, the fact that is a crime story about a kidnapping puts it pretty solidly in my wheelhouse. Any one of these things would get my interest and attention but having the trifecta makes this a must see for me.
2. Grand Budapest Hotel (3/7)
Yet again another of my favorite directors is turning in a movie which puts it high on my list and the trailers have kept it there. With a huge cast of terrific performers and the story sounds pretty fun. It also looks like it is more of the same from Wes Anderson, a polarizing director who people either love or hate. I am very solidly in the love camp and his style, humor, pacing and general quirkiness are big draws for me. While it doesn’t look like it is going to change the mind of someone who has not enjoyed Anderson’s work in the past, it really doesn’t matter. It doesn’t look like it is trying to and looks to fit right in with an excellent oeuvre.
1. Guardians of the Galaxy (8/1)
I was already really looking forward to this movie as I am a fan of both the comic and director James Gunn but after an excellent first trailer it shot to number one with a bullet. This is a big risk for Marvel as it is a strange and somewhat obscure team but if it is done well it could take the Marvel Cinematic Universe in whole new directions. If the first trailer is any indication they have absolutely nailed it. I am very interested to see how well this film does given that it features a gun-toting talking raccoon and a tree thing that says only ‘I am Groot’ and I really hope it opens up new cosmic adventures so we can see Quasar, Nova, Adam Warlock, Starjammers and other such outer space characters (hopefully there wouldn’t be rights issues with the Starjammers since apparently the X-Men franchise isn’t going with the Corsair as Scott and Alex Summer’s dad thing). There is a lot to love in that neck of the Marvel universe and I hope that Guardians is the gateway to it.
Okay so that is that. Runners up include: Transcendence, Jupiter Ascending, Dumb & Dumber To, Edge of Tomorrow and Godzilla. Among several others. Sound off below if you want to share your own!
