So because most of the country hasn’t caught up with the awesome invention of the light bulb, they started lying about what time it really was this weekend. Why do I care? Because cable channels fall for this lie and change the times of all their TV shows. For networks it doesn’t matter, but cable shows all air an hour later. Well, some people have to work early in the morning and can’t stay up past midnight writing a recap. So from now on it looks like you will all have to settle for the Walking Dead recap for the next day. Don’t blame me, blame the assholes that won’t abolish the antiquated Daylight Savings Time.
So now that I have that rant off of my chest, let’s get to the recap.
We open with Rick sitting contemplative while bandaging his hand. A reminder that his pimp hand is strong when he wants it to be. Poor Tyrese.
Lizzie goes to see Carol. Carol is going on a run with Rick to gather more food that was lost in the outbreak. Wait, did the walkers eat the food? Or maybe just afraid to eat it now? OK, yeah I wouldn’t want to eat food that was held in a plague ridden cell block either. Or any cell block for that matter. Speaking of cells, Carol is talking to Lizzie through a glass wall. Symbolizing her keeping Lizzie at a distance?
Rick has a flashback of Carol murdreing Karen by stabbing her in the head and then dragging her bloody corpse through the cell. Rick is now apparently Will Graham, able to see the memories of killers through their own eyes…and through a third person camera angle that makes it easier for the audience to see what is going on.
Rick is now loading up the car, looking at a case of knives. Is he thinking of killing Carol on the trip? Or is he nervous she will kill him?
“DON’T CALL ME MOM!” Carol snaps at Lizzie. A little harsh. I mean yeah, you aren’t her mom, and it is extremely weird she would call you mom after such a short time, but again this is a young girl that just watched her dad die an agonizingly painful death. Let her grieve just a bit, yeah? Maybe a little softer when telling her not to call you mom?
“Don’t be scared?” “How?” “You fight it. And then one day you change. We all change.” And we have our Talking Dead hashtag. Or pound sign if you are old school. #WeAllChange (Don’t bother trying it now. It’s too late.)
– COMMERCIAL BREAK
Tyrese is washing his clothes in the river. At least they DO wash their clothes at times. “It helps to keep moving.” Bob tells Tyrese. “No it doesn’t!” Damn, nobody likes D’angelo.
Carol tells Rick that Maggie wanted to come along. “Somebody has to stay back.” “You mean somebody you trust?” Why so moody? You just admitted to murdering two people. Of course he doesn’t trust you! She then starts trying to justify her actions. Rick stares right through her. This is going to be a really fun drive.
Well I guess in the zombie apocalypse there are still assholes that write in the dust of ar windows. “Don’t mind the dust.” Asshole.
Tyrese is hulking out on some bushes. Hacking the shit out of them. And we have Bush Zombies! Tyrese won’t let go of the zombie. He definitely wants to just die. By Bush Zombies!
Carol and Rick enter a house and are attacked by a walker. Carol tabs it in the head. See? It’s not just humans she can stab! And now two humans come out of the upstairs bedroom. They have fruit!
– COMMERCIAL BREAK
Sam and Ana are the two new cast members. They call the zombies Skineaters. Rick tells them that they call them Walkers. Battle of the slang terms. Zombie of course is a trademarked term that shall not be uttered on this show!
So the hippies are very weak. Takes them multiple shots to kill a zomb…err skineater. “Don’t you have knives?” “Waht are we supposed to do, stab them in the head?” “Uh, yeah” Carol loves stabbing in the head. And not in the fun kinky way.
“How many have you killed?” We get it Rick. Your dick is bigger than theirs. Let it go, they are weak.
Tyrese is again really hacking the shit out of another bush. This is going to cause Greenpeace protests of the show. Michonne asks Tyrese if he wants to die. At this point I think that is rather obvious. Then she gets all Yoda on him. “Anger makes you stupid. Stupid gets you killed.” Tyrese then asks why Michonne keeps looking for the governor. Served.
The bush zombies apparently had an antifreeze cocktail to commit suicide. Say what you will about the Jim Jones massacre, but at least Kool-Aid is a damn tasty beverage.
Back to the hippies with Rick and Carol. “Did we pass your test?” Rick tells them where the prison is but wants them to stay in the house. Carol urges them to go ahead and go out. She really hates weak people. Rick gives his watch to Sam to meet them back at the house in 2 hours. Bye, watch.
Bob is talking about his past groups. Apparently this is the third group. His last 2 all died off except him. He calls himself a curse. Dude, do you want them to kick you out? Learn when to keep your mouth shut. And now we learn that Bob is a really bad alcoholic. OK, NOW this is getting interesting. Darryl seems to be taking a liking to him. Tells him it’s bullshit to feel guilty for Zack’s death. “You won’t be staying alone. Let’s go.”
– COMMERCIAL BREAK
Carol argues that she did the humane thing. But was it the right thing? “I killed 2 people and you haven’t said a word about it! You can be a farmer, but you can’t be JUST a farmer!” “I never murdered 2 of our own.” “Just one.” I wouldn’t keep poking that bear, Carol. “You don’t have to like what I did. Just accept it.” Getting damn ballsy.
D’ang…err Bob looks down and sees some books. Or is there something else there I don’t see? I’m guessing a bottle.
Rick is intrigued by Carol ability to fix Sam’s dislocated shoulder. “Did you learn that from Herschel?” “The internet. Easier than telling the ER nurse I fell down the stairs for the third time” “Why did you stay?” “I convinced myself I liked him. He made a really good living.” Now I’m not saying you’re a gold digger…
Rick and Carol talking about their dead loved ones. “Sometimes I expect to see her.” Yeah, you saw her everywhere all last season.
Something is holding a gate open. Aaaand it’s a severed leg. Ana’s leg. And she’s being devoured by two skineaters (Let them have this one.)
-COMMERCIAL BREAK
Back to Michonne and Bob taking drugs. Like TAKING them, not ingesting them. Bob may be an alcoholic, but he’s not some drug addict. You can tell by how choosy he is being with the drugs. Penicilin doesn’t even get you high, bro. Seriously though, why be so picky about which ones to take? Just take them all! They are attacked by walkers. Bleeding from their eyes. Great, the flu again.
Rick and Carol waiting for Sam. He’s late. And he had such a nice watch too.
Back to the Scooby Gang. Need to get through the window. “We make our own way!” HULK SMASH!
Bob drops his bag. Holding on to it for dear life. Must have booze.
Yep, it’s booze. Whiskey. Bob needs some help. Almost pulls a gun on Darryl. Darryl almost throws him into the zombies. “You should have kept walking that day. Take one sip before meds get to our people and I will beat your ass into the ground.” And he burns his last bridge. Somebody needs an intervention.
-COMMERCIAL
Carol goes to get in the car. Her door is locked. Oh shit.”They might have lived. Karen and David. When Tyrese finds out he’ll kill you.” “Rick, it’s me. No one else needs to know. I had to do something.” “No, you didn’t” Rick says she’s no longer scared to be alone. So go kick rocks. Pretty cold, but warranted. He does give her gas to fill a car and gives her supplies. She gives him her watch. Goodbye Carol.
Michonne tells Darryl she is done searching for the governor. Because Carol is going to now be the villain of the season. Right?
So it was easily the best episode of the season. The moral questions with Rick and Carol already have people debating over who was right and who was wrong. It’s obviously not over with Carol. My guess is she somehow gets in touch with Darryl and starts to turn part of the core group against Rick. Maybe even Carl. I also love the angle with Bob, after being pointless for the first 3 episodes. Having an alcoholic or addict do anything they can to get their fix in the zombie apocalypse is a very compelling angle and I am definitely looking forward to how they handle it. We finally might have something going for this season yet.
