Patrick's 20 Favorite Action Movies

16. Timecop (1994)

One of only a handful (read: three) Jean-Claude Van Damme movies I can stand, Timecop is a time travel picture in which time travel is invented and in the far flung future of 2004 people are using it to go back in time to steal money. In order to combat this and prevent paradoxes that could destroy the time line the government sets up a police force to go back in time and stop deviants from fucking everything up. Van Damme’s Walker is one such Timecop and something of a broken man after his wife’s (Mia Sara) murder. Walker ends up trying to stop the corrupt Senator Macomb’s (Ron Silver) time traveling fund raising efforts and maybe save his wife for good measure.  The plot and action is fun as Walker jumps back and forth from the future to the past and back again amidst future changing ripples, conspiracies, betrayal and a whole lot of doing the splits and punching dudes. Timecop is a great time if you can get with the silliness and just go for the ride. Also if you can manage to close your eyes during the love scene as it features a screen filling shot of Van Damme’s ass. In the theater I thought it was Sara’s for a minute and suffered weeks of sexual trauma when I realized that she was actually on the bottom.

  1. The Professional? I effing HATED that movie SO MUCH!!!! UGH. You know when you think a movie is just so bad that it makes you angry that you watched it? That is how I feel about The Professional.

I just don’t DIG movies like that as a general rule.

    1. Given that you never saw the Matrix because it ‘didn’t look even remotely good’ I think it is safe to say this whole list is probably not material you would dig.

    1. GJ: As I said above: I tried to keep it to movies that didn’t stray too far into other their own sub-genre where I could, for instance I avoided primarily martial arts movies as they deserve their own list.

Ninja Assassin definitely goes on the martial arts list which currently doesn’t exist.
