17. Casino Royale (2006)

While relatively recent, Casino Royale has quickly become one of my favorite action films. A reboot of the Bond franchise, Casino Royale takes Bond all the way back to the beginning (while somehow retaining Dame Judi Dench’s M) with a stripped down Bond without outrageous gadgets and (as) unbelievable stunts. Spurred by the success of the Bourne series, Casino Royale delivered great and exciting action with a much more serious Bond who did not give a damn if his martini was shaken or stirred. He did still like to get it on with women, preferably married ones who can end up dead in a hammock later. Directed by Martin Campbell who gave us Pierce Brosnan’s best Bond outing, Goldeneye, has a sure hand here and manages to keep things very exciting while grounding them in a much more realistic world than we have ever seen from Bond. Daniel Craig stepping into the Bond role for the first time is absolutely perfect and is, to my mind, the best to take on the role. This may be blasphemous to the devotees of Sean Connery but I don’t care. Casino Royale is my favorite Bond movie with my favorite Bond actor.

  1. The Professional? I effing HATED that movie SO MUCH!!!! UGH. You know when you think a movie is just so bad that it makes you angry that you watched it? That is how I feel about The Professional.

    I just don’t DIG movies like that as a general rule.


    1. Given that you never saw the Matrix because it ‘didn’t look even remotely good’ I think it is safe to say this whole list is probably not material you would dig.


    1. GJ: As I said above: I tried to keep it to movies that didn’t stray too far into other their own sub-genre where I could, for instance I avoided primarily martial arts movies as they deserve their own list.

      Ninja Assassin definitely goes on the martial arts list which currently doesn’t exist.
