Patrick's 20 Favorite Action Movies

19. Bad Boys (1995)

The feature film debut of the much maligned Michael Bay, Bad Boys is also the first time that Will Smith showed he could do action and the first time I could stand Martin Lawrence in anything (if it weren’t for Bad Boys II it would also be the last). Bad Boys was funny, exciting and brought buddy cop movies to a whole new level. What was once a vehicle for Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz, Bad Boys showed us fresh action scenes shot in a highly stylized way that hadn’t yet been overdone. The chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence was tremendous and helped bolster the story of two cops forced to pretend to be the other one when a murder witness comes in for protection. The film ran out of money before the explosive finale was shot and director Bay gave up his director’s fee to pay for it. Say what you want about Bay but this is an awesome movie from beginning to end and his dedication to it really paid off.

  1. The Professional? I effing HATED that movie SO MUCH!!!! UGH. You know when you think a movie is just so bad that it makes you angry that you watched it? That is how I feel about The Professional.

I just don’t DIG movies like that as a general rule.

    1. Given that you never saw the Matrix because it ‘didn’t look even remotely good’ I think it is safe to say this whole list is probably not material you would dig.

    1. GJ: As I said above: I tried to keep it to movies that didn’t stray too far into other their own sub-genre where I could, for instance I avoided primarily martial arts movies as they deserve their own list.

Ninja Assassin definitely goes on the martial arts list which currently doesn’t exist.
